PROPOSED CANCER CENTER

Scope: CONCEPTUAL

Our conceptual approach to all our projects responds to a binary objective- FIRST is to champion on functionality and efficiency of space and SECOND is to reveal a story – a message, a- meaning.

We begin solving the problem by solving issues on functionality and efficiency. As with any significant project, responding to the client needs now and creating a bridge to connect those needs towards the future is a significant aspect of the design process. In design, functionality is what gives your form its substance. Once achieved, aesthetics come later almost effortlessly. One thing to this project is the absence of a project site. From when we had the initial briefing it was made clear to us that the project at this point is still hypothetical however should it push through, this could potentially be one of many. Therefore we respond to that by coming up with a potential prototype. First thing we did is to convert the space program into volumes. By treating the volumes like modular lego blocks we are given the liberty to stack and interlock them under different configurations and conform to any site profile. This additive subtractive design methodology also allows us to easily take out a component should it be not applicable. Flexibility is what you gain.

Completing our twofold design objective we use architecture as a language to convey subliminal affirmation. We start responding to the problem by focusing on 3 theoretical clients – the care-giver, the patient, and the family because these three entities inside a cancer facility give meaning to the word LIFE. It's not the technologically advanced equipment, it's not the machines, it's them.

We counter the negative stigma of being inside a treatment facility by designing a space that can breathe and a space that bathes in light. To punctuate this intent we designed a beautiful courtyard with a prominent tree that sits in the heart of it designed to be visible from all corners of the building. This tree is bounded by massive volumes of concrete interlocked together symbolizing the tremendous team effort of care givers and families towards the preservation of life. This poetry is enhanced by employing Brutalist approach – an architectural style reflective of the unyielding resilience of human spirit.

Cancer is a disease notorious for terminating life but like what a fragile and courageous plant sprouting through the fissures of concrete teaches us, no matter the odds, no matter how impossible, life will always find a way.
