VASQUEZ MAUSOLEUM

Scope: DESIGN & BUILD

Compressing the ideologies into a 320 sqft (30sqm) property of a celebrated architect like Topy Vasquez to whom this mausoleum was designed for certainly offered unique design challenges. The strategy called for breaking the structure in parts to enable metaphorical representation of his legacy.

Beginning from the facade, the predominant bare concrete is meant to symbolize his integrity. Like a sculptural ribbon, a spiral staircase provides access to the roof deck and serves as a reminder for his love for curves and undulating surfaces. The wall that encloses the half-bath will be finished with white pebble wash-out, an old-school technique that he fondly used and promoted because of its simple yet timeless statement. On the side fenestration you will find Jalousie windows, another architectural element that he refused to retire throughout his career. Commonly used back in the day in 4" modules, he became known for upcycling the idea into contemporary applications by simply using wider panes of 6".

On the inside, his tombstone will be neatly finished in beautiful white and Citrine Quartz and his name in Brass will be of his own handwriting. A floor hatch also opens for storage as a response to the cultural needs of the family.

As a response to the need of providing comfortable space for a typical Filipino family of significant size, seating areas are extended horizontally through the deck space and vertically through the roof deck.
